Is meditation a superpower?

meditation is a superpower

When I first started meditating, I very quickly got the sense that I had discovered an in-built superpower.

“With meditation, I can do anything,” I would think to myself.

Get through anything.

Just last week, as soon as I sat, I had the awareness that tonight’s practice would be a chaotic one.

A mirror reflecting back how hectic my life is right now.

Because perhaps, like you, every part of my world needs attention at the moment, and lots of it.

Like how work is full on (and whose isn’t?)

Like how I’ve separated from my husband, and am settling our kids into a new way of life.

Like how my mum had a fall in her home post-stroke and spent two nights alone on the floor.

Or how I’m making a long-distance relationship work; juggling four sets of calendars.

And that my first-born daughter is 17. Full stop.

And on it goes.

The one leveller, with so many balls in the air, so many spinning plates to keep spinning, is meditation.

Meditation is a leveller, a balancer, a corrector.

A cushioner, a softener, a comforter.

It has the capacity to both relax and amp up; enliven and calm down.

It brings all the fragmented pieces of ourselves back together to make whole.

It’s a clean energy source to an ever-draining battery.

And simultaneously allows us to find relief from, and get closer to, difficult emotions.

Which, lately, I know about, all too well.

Over the past year I’ve visited hell a few times; meditation got me through.

And 12 years on, I still get the sense, that meditation is a superpower.
