Today was an anxiety day. Returning to work after successfully switching off for two weeks, the reality of how many buckets in my life are brimming and need my attention, also returned, in super high-def. Anxiety can take us out of commission. Bring about a freeze response. Body frozen, but mind still flitting from bucket to bucket, trying to decide which one to empty, but emptying none. Thankfully, I meditate. But I don’t meditate to make me zen and make the anxiety go away. It takes a while to accept that. What meditation does, in response to anxiety, is make me more aware. “Oh, this is anxiety. This is how my mind and body are responding.” And with awareness, I know I’m stuck, I know what anxiety is asking of me (it wants me to move), and I know what I need to do. So when it’s said that meditation reduces stress, it’s not just a soothing balm for our nervous system. That’s a sometimes side-effect that we love but can’t demand. Meditation makes you super in-tune with yourself, and with your emotions, so you can respond with skill and grace. (Thereby reducing stress 😜.) —-

Not sure meditation is working for you? Too many thoughts, can’t sit still, what’s the point? Thankfully, the measure of meditation’s effectiveness happens “off the cushion”. A scattered brain in meditation simply shines a spotlight on how the mind normally works. Not that meditation isn’t working. Things that signpost meditation is working for you, no matter how scattered, restless, or bored you may feel, include: 1. You’re more patient
2. You make better decisions
3. You stop and smell the roses
4. You get more done
5. You feel more connected to others
6. You catch fewer bugs
7. You don’t overindulge as often

Feeling proud. 💛 In August 2021 I embarked on a

Feeling proud. 💛 In August 2021 I embarked on a 14-month journey to become a Dynamic Emotional Integration licensed trainer. (Mouthful, I know. 😄) My certificate arrived this week from the U.S., signed by @karlamclaren.m.ed, author of The Language of Emotions, The Art of Empathy, Embracing Anxiety, and more. Back in 2020, when I began my meditation teacher training with @melbournemeditationcentre, I was introduced to Karla’s work and was immediately drawn in. Having come to meditation and mindfulness to deal with panic and anxiety, this additional perspective - that the two emotions (and all the emotions) actually had important work to do when they arise - took my understanding and skill to a level I’d not reached in the 10 years I’d be meditating. I devoured Karla’s books, did her courses, and eventually signed up to teach this amazing work to others. I’m humbled to be the first DEI licensed trainer in Australia and can’t wait to incorporate all I’ve learned into and alongside my mindfulness teaching. If you’ve not read Karla’s books, start with the newly revised edition of The Language of Emotions. It’s a game changer. ❤️ Many thanks to @sandidavis4, @sherryjeanolander, @brilliantemotions and Jen Asdorian for your wonderful instruction and wisdom this past year. So grateful 🙏🏻.
